What's the cheapest car rental place?

I'm driving from San Diego to Des Moines, Iowa over 5 days... I need at least a mini van or suv because i'm hauling some stuff and 2 large dogs... what's the cheapest place?? I can't seem to find anything even reasonableWhat's the cheapest car rental place?
Go to Orbitz and enter your data, they will give you prices from numerous companies, and they also have full insurance for $9 a day, which is a lot less than the rental companies charge. I use them all the time. What's the cheapest car rental place?
A one-way rental pretty much excludes the smaller regional companies like the rent-a wrecks. You could try Enterprise truck rental, but I'm not sure they do one-way rentals.

The big guys like Uhaul, Ryder, or Penske want in the area of $1100 and that's for the smallest truck based vehicle. They don't one way their cargo vans.

Do you have a car now? Consider a small trailer from UHaul and put the dogs in the back seat, your stuff in the trailer. Those rates (4x8x4)start at $210.00 and you get 8 days to return it.
Budget has a new promo where you get 25% off if you use a Discover Card. Did you try that?

When are you going? It's a one-way rental?
I'm not sure if you have Rent a Wrecks out on the west coast, but if you do, try them. Also, there are some small independent rental car companies out there that might have better rates than the big companies. Try a google search for them.
Hertz renta-car is by far the most affordable. They offer unlimited mileage and have lower rates than many of the other places. Just make sure you return the car on a completely full tank, that's really the only catch they have, they'll charge $2 more than the regular price of fuel if the car comes back with less than a full tank (as do most other car rental companies).

I used to work for Enterprise (as a driver and detailer), avoid them like the plague, they have numerous hidden fees. If you rent a vehicle, I would stay away from the PT cruiser and the Nissan Xterra, they will likely leave you stranded (we had more problems with them than any other car and had to pick up stranded customers on a regular basis). The best rental SUV's I have driven (extensively) have been the Ford Edge or the GMC Envoy. Don't tell them your bringing your dogs (that is an additional fee in all rental companies, and they enforce it). I recommend laying down a blanket to reduce the amount of dog hair and vacuum it out before you return the vehicle. I've heard Budget is fairly good too, but I've never dealt with them so I can't be sure. Good Luck
