I was told that Hawaii can actually be quite inexpensive if you stray from the tourist areas and do the nature stuff. You'll need either a rental car or a bus pass.

Going to the local ABC stores was a good suggestion, eating out can get very expensive.

Get a few people to travel with you and you can share the cost of a hotel, car and it can almost be as cheap to cook for one as for three. Plan your trip as much as possible before you leave so you'll know about how much you'll need. Choose your activities carefully ( if their are not free) they can also be costly and sometime disappointing.

I like trip advisor for deciding if a place is worth visiting. Anyone can post there comments like here so it's more likely to be unbiased.

Get a villa with friends/family or stay in a hostel where you can make your own food. I hear food is really expensive, so go to Costco when you get there and bring Power Bars for breakfasts. Go at a less busy time like in the summer for cheaper airfares.
Airfair: Book departures 6 months ahead and for mid-week departures in October.

Stay: Book into hotels/inns as far away from the beaches as possible; and ask for rooms with a ';mountain'; or ';city'; view. Better yet, check the local ';Y'; or hostels for vacancies.

Car: Forget it, take the bus or walk!

Entertainment: Clip out coupons from the many tour magazines available at every street corner downtown.

Food: Go to the local grocery stores, eat local food (not mainland food). STAY AWAY FROM ABC STORES!

Clothes: Shop at Ross, WalMart, Target or go to the Swap Meet.

For an even tighter budget; for entertainment, just hang out and watch people at the beach, in the park, on the downtown streets, etc.

One last thing: No souveniers!

Now that's my version of ';tight';!
Rent a van, camp out next to the beaches. A buddy of mine and his wife did it for a month. Saved a lot of money on Hotel rooms.
Make sure you buy your drinks, snacks, etc. at ABC Stores - prices are reasonable %26amp; you can find these stores everywhere!
