Ok - I've never heard of them but I do have to say this to you.....

Have you ever been to Rome before? If you have, you will know they way they drive out there and you really, really will not want to.

Cars are parked so close to each other on the streets you need a can opener to get out of the space (I believe it is the norm not to apply the handbrake - only the car at the start and end of the spaces do this - this means other cars when parking can nudge your car forward).

Every car is dented, even the brand new ones.

Brakes are rarely used, when crossing roads, pedestrians have to have nerves of steel and 'lock eyes' with the driver for them to actually stop as they will carry on driving and swerve round you. Don't run across the roads, this is a sign of weakness!!

In Rome, you can actually walk most places - it's lovely and you see far more. The roads are clogged, mainly with loads and I mean LOADS of mopeds. When traffic lights change, about 30+ mopeds set off at speed before the cars.

I personally wouldn't rent a car as it *would* get damaged, meaning you'd either have to pay the damage waiver fee beforehand OR stump up the inflated cost of a repair.

We had a very reasonable price using Kenwel car rental. 480$ US + (they say $40 US for road tax). This is 0 deductible but they said the car rental agency may put a $500US hold on the rental in case of vandalism, i.e., broken windows, tire blowout, etc. Is there any way to actually verify how much of a hold will be made to my credit card without actually making reservations and finding out only when we get to the car rental agency in Rome. I wouldn't really want a $2000 US hold on my credit card hoping that I'll get it back since it is a different country.
You'll want to use Kemwel since they are the Enterprise or Rent-A-Car of Europe. I used them when I was in Paris and I would definitely use them again if they were my first choice in Europe. Highly recommend.
